Dental Bridge Versus Implant Cost: £332 on the NHS or Budapest?
LymyVoyage finding
Partially supported by the available data.
Prices are firm for the NHS but indicative for Hungary; studies disagree on whether implants outlast bridges.
One missing tooth, two standard fixes. A bridge hangs a false tooth from crowns on the teeth either side. An implant screws a titanium post into the jaw and puts a crown on top. Dental-tourism sites price the implant in Budapest against the implant in London, and leave the bridge out.

For a UK patient, the bridge changes the comparison. In England, an NHS bridge falls under Band 3, which costs £332.10 for the whole course of treatment.1 Implants are "usually only available privately", according to the NHS.2 Dentaly, a dental information site, puts a private UK implant with its crown at £1,850-3,600, and £1,225-1,530 in Hungary.3
What one missing tooth costs
| Option | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| NHS bridge, England (Band 3, whole course) | £332.10 | 1 |
| Private implant and crown, UK | £1,850-3,600 | 3 |
| Implant and crown, Hungary | £1,225-1,530 | 3 |
| Implant only, Hungarian clinic listings | $450-920 | 4 |
| Implant with crown and CT scan, one Budapest clinic | about $1,790 | 4 |
| Three-unit zirconium bridge, one Budapest clinic | about $1,390 | 5 |
The NHS bridge: £332.10 if you can get it
NHS dental charges in England have three bands. Band 3, at £332.10, covers crowns, dentures and bridges.1 It is one charge for the whole course of treatment, not per tooth.1
Implants sit outside that system. The NHS says they are sometimes available for patients who cannot wear dentures for specific reasons, but are usually private and expensive.2
So a UK patient choosing a bridge on the NHS pays £332.10 at home. Clinics abroad price a bridge per unit instead, so compare dental bridge cost per unit before reading a quote. No Hungarian price found in this research comes close.
The private implant: where Hungary does save money
For someone who wants an implant, Hungary is cheaper. Dentaly's comparison puts an implant with crown at £1,225-1,530 in Hungary against £1,850-3,600 in the UK.3 It calls those figures indicative, and they exclude flights and hotels.3
Bookimed, a medical-tourism broker, lists Hungarian implants from $450 to $920 at named clinics.4 Those prices do not say whether the crown and abutment are included. Evergreen Dental's figure of about $1,790 does, along with a CT scan.4 The broker's headline average for Hungary is $2,000, with a range of $450 to $9,600.4
Bridges are cheaper in Budapest too. Bookimed's listings give an average bridge price of $390, though it does not say whether that is per unit.5 Its listings also cite about $1,390 for a three-unit zirconium bridge at Evergreen Dental.5

Does the implant last longer?
Dental sites often say the implant is worth the extra because it lasts longer. The evidence is mixed.
A 2007 systematic review in Clinical Oral Implants Research pooled survival rates across studies. It estimated 10-year survival at 89.2% for conventional bridges held by teeth and 89.4% for single implant crowns.6 On those figures, the two last about as long.
A 2012 economic evaluation by South Korea's National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency reached a different result. Its 10-year model found implant survival 10.4 percentage points higher than a three-unit bridge.7 It put the implant's extra cost at $251 to $325 over the bridge.7 The two studies used different data and methods, so they cannot settle the question between them.
What the headline numbers leave out
The NHS price assumes you can get an NHS dentist and that the dentist recommends a bridge. This article did not measure NHS access, which varies by area. The £332.10 charge is England's; Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland set their own.
A bridge also needs crowns on the teeth either side, because they hold it up.6 If those teeth are healthy, that is a cost a price table does not show. If they already need crowns, the bridge does two jobs at once.
The Hungarian prices come from a broker and a dental information site, not from the clinics' own price lists. They leave out flights and hotels.3 An implant also usually needs more than one visit, months apart, and the Bookimed listings do not say how many trips the price assumes.4
How to use these numbers
If you are in England and have an NHS dentist, ask whether a bridge is suitable for the gap. At £332.10, it is the cheapest option in this comparison by more than £800.13
If you want an implant, compare a written Hungarian quote that names the crown and abutment with a UK private quote for the same. Add the cost of every trip the treatment needs. Then weigh the difference against the 2007 review's finding that both options last about as long over ten years.6
An implant in Hungary from £1,225. An NHS bridge in England: £332.10 for the whole course. Which one is the deal?
