LASIK Cost: Per Eye or Both Eyes? US, UK, Turkey, Mexico

LymyVoyage finding

Disputed -- sources materially disagree.

Booking sites give overlapping price ranges with different units; on PlacidWay's both-eyes figures Tijuana costs under half of San Diego, but the size of any saving depends on which unit a quote uses.

LASIK is laser surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct short sight, long sight or astigmatism. Most people have both eyes done. Yet LASIK cost is quoted per eye by some sellers and for both eyes by others, and some do not say which.

That makes many international comparisons unreliable before anyone looks at quality. The same $1,500 figure appears as a per-eye price for Mexico on one booking site and as a both-eyes price for Tijuana on another.

1 / 6

LASIK in Mexico: $1,500 per eye, says one booking site. $1,500 for both eyes, says another. Which is the real price?

Per eye, both eyes, or unstated

US and UK prices are usually per eye. All About Vision, citing data from the market research firm Market Scope, puts the average US price at $2,246 per eye in 2026.1 The UK chain Optimax advertises LASIK "from £1,295 per eye," including the consultation and aftercare until discharge.2

Turkish prices are less consistent. Acibadem International, a Turkish hospital group, says Turkish "quotes are per eye."3 A travel guide site gives $800 to $1,500 per eye.4 But on the booking site Bookimed, an Istanbul hospital lists an I-LASIK package at $2,500 "for both eyes."5 Another listing on the same page, at $1,400, does not say which.

Bookimed's own guide then gives Turkey as $1,690 to $1,750 per eye.6 That per-eye range sits inside the prices its listings show for both eyes or with no unit at all.

Package deals can come per pair. In 2008, a UK agency sold laser surgery for both eyes in Istanbul at £1,299, according to the International Medical Travel Journal.7 The price included flights, three hotel nights and transfers.

Mexico: the clearest mismatch

Bookimed's guide lists Mexico at $1,500 to $3,000 per eye.6 The medical travel site PlacidWay lists standard LASIK in Tijuana at $1,500 to $1,800 for both eyes.8 Read literally, the two disagree by a factor of two or more.

PlacidWay gives San Diego, across the border, at $3,500 to $4,500 for both eyes. That is roughly in line with the Market Scope US average of $2,246 per eye, or about $4,500 for two. On PlacidWay's figures, Tijuana costs less than half of San Diego.

The comparison holds whichever way you read the Mexico figures. The size of the saving does not.

The UK figure that kept being quoted

A widely cited UK average, £1,605, comes from WhatClinic data reported by Ophthalmology Times in January 2017.9 The article does not say whether that is per eye or for both. Its comparison prices for Turkey, Spain, the Czech Republic and Poland do not say either.

For reference, Optimax today starts at £1,295 per eye.2 Any table still using the 2017 figure is nine years old and has no stated unit.

What the headline numbers leave out

Follow-up. The FDA advises seeing the doctor within 24 to 48 hours of surgery, and "at regular intervals after that for at least the first six months."10 It says vision can take three to six months to settle. PlacidWay's Tijuana prices include "your first follow-up visit."8 Later checks happen at home, or mean another trip.

Retreatment. Some patients need a second laser treatment, called an enhancement. A study from the London Vision Clinic, presented at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons congress in 2022, followed 24,012 eyes.11 Among patients under 40 with moderate short sight, 5% had a retreatment by five years and 15% by 15 years. Among under-40s with high short sight, the 15-year figure was 46%.

Those are one clinic's results, and they depend on its own policy for offering retreatment. The FDA adds that eye measurements should be stable for two visits at least three months apart before any re-operation.10 A retreatment abroad means another trip.

The procedure itself. Acibadem says the method, whether LASIK, PRK or SMILE, can only be chosen after a corneal scan.3 PlacidWay's Tijuana prices rise from $1,500 for standard LASIK to $2,800 or more for SMILE, a newer keyhole technique.8 A quote given before the scan may not be the price you pay.

US pricing has its own catches. All About Vision says some surgeons charge extra for custom wavefront treatment or price by prescription strength.1 It also warns that a later enhancement may not be included in an advertised price.

How to compare quotes

Ask each clinic for a written price for both eyes, for the named procedure. Ask what it includes: the pre-surgery scans, follow-up visits, drops, and whether a retreatment is free and for how long.

Then double any per-eye price before comparing it. If a page does not state the unit, ask. It is the difference between a price and half a price.
