Dental Implant Warranty Abroad: What 'Lifetime' Covers
Research & verification
We independently research information from publicly available sources. Claims are cross-checked against multiple sources where possible. When sources disagree, the disagreement is reported rather than resolved by assumption. LymyVoyage does not provide medical advice or make individual treatment recommendations.

Clinics abroad advertise a "lifetime warranty" on dental implants and a "lifetime guarantee" on hair transplants. The word does a lot of selling. What it covers depends on three documents most patients never read: the implant maker's guarantee, the clinic's own warranty terms, and the consumer law underneath both.
We read the published terms of five dental clinics and three hair-transplant offers in Turkey, Hungary, Croatia and Mexico. We also read the guarantee terms of two large implant makers. This is what "lifetime" turned out to attach to.
Clinics abroad sell "lifetime" implant warranties. Two implant makers give "lifetime" cover to the dentist, for a replacement part. What does the patient get?
What each warranty covers, side by side
| Clinic, as published | Country | Longest term stated | Who decides a claim | Travel for a repair | Ends the cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smile Dental Turkey | Turkey | Lifetime on implant screws; 5 years on crowns | The clinic's team, by email | Up to 200 GBP/EUR/USD flights and 6 hotel nights, one visit in year one | No yearly check-up, another dentist without approval |
| Medic Istanbul | Turkey | 10 years on implants; 5 on crowns and bridges | Not stated | Patient pays | Care at another dental office, accidents |
| Sani Dental Group | Mexico | 2 years on implants, 5 with yearly check-ups | Not stated | Patient pays | Repair by another office, smoking, grinding |
| Budapest dental guide | Hungary | Lifetime on the implant, "material only" | The clinic, after assessment | "Some clinics" pay | Missed yearly check-ups, work not done there |
| Dental Clinic Croatia | Croatia | "Lifetime warranty" on implants | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Dr. Serkan Aygin | Turkey (hair) | "Lifetime guarantee" on graft growth | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Asthetica | Turkey (hair) | Replace non-growing grafts free | Not stated | Not stated | Not enough donor hair |
| Medic Istanbul | Turkey (hair) | Free consultation and treatment again | Not stated | Patient pays | Not stated |
"Not stated" means the page we read did not say. The full terms may exist elsewhere, which is why you should ask for them.
"Lifetime" usually means the screw
Read the dental rows by component, not by headline. Where a clinic splits its terms, the longest period sits on the implant itself. That is the titanium screw in the bone. Crowns and bridges get far less: five years at Smile Dental Turkey and Medic Istanbul.12 At Sani Dental Group in Mexico, porcelain and zirconium work carries "two (2) full years".3
The Budapest guide is the most explicit. Its table gives implants "Lifetime (material only)".4 Abutments, the connector between screw and crown, get 5 to 10 years. Crowns get 3 to 5.
The screw is also the part an implant maker already guarantees.
The maker's guarantee goes to the dentist
Straumann and Nobel Biocare both offer lifetime guarantees on their implants. Neither is a promise to the patient.
Straumann's UK terms say the guarantee applies "in favor of the attending physician/dentist only". They add that "patients or intermediate suppliers, may not derive any rights" from it.5 It covers "the replacement of Straumann Products and not any associated costs". The one exception is a £700 treatment payment when a Roxolid implant fractures.
Straumann's lifetime implant guarantee is given to the dentist only. Its own terms say patients "may not derive any rights" from it.5
Nobel Biocare's warranty is headed "Warranties for Treatment Provider".6 It replaces an implant "that fails to remain in the bone", free of charge. It does not pay "the Treatment Provider or the patient for any additional components, tools, treatment costs, or other costs and expenses". The two makers' terms agree on both points: the dentist claims, and the claim pays for a part.
Nobel Biocare's cover also depends on how the clinic worked. The dentist must have used only original Nobel Biocare parts and followed its procedures. Otherwise the warranty is "null and void".6 You cannot check that from home. You can ask the clinic which implant brand it uses, and get the brand and batch in writing.
The clinic's terms decide the rest
What a clinic adds on top of the maker's part is the real warranty. Three conditions recur in the terms we read.
The clinic decides. Smile Dental Turkey's travel cover applies only "when our dental team confirms via email that a revision is required".1 The Budapest guide describes a process of contact, documents and assessment by the clinic, with no independent check.4
You travel. Medic Istanbul says "flight costs, accommodation and other accommodation costs are the responsibility of the patient".2 Sani Dental Group's warranty "only covers the cost of dental treatment performed in our clinic, excluding any additional expenses, such as travel expenses".3
Smile Dental Turkey is the exception in this set. It pays up to 200 pounds, euros or dollars toward flights, and up to six hotel nights, for one revision visit in the first 365 days.1
Another dentist ends it. Sani Dental Group says its warranty "is void on work repaired by another office".3 Medic Istanbul lists "dental care performed in another dental office".2 Smile Dental Turkey voids it for treatment by another dentist "without authorisation".1 So a dentist at home who fixes an urgent problem may end the cover on the work.
Yearly check-ups are the other common condition. Sani Dental Group extends its implant warranty from two years to five only if you come back "at least once a year".3 Smile Dental Turkey wants proof of a yearly check-up, with an invoice.1
Hair-transplant guarantees promise growth, not results
Hair-transplant guarantees are vaguer still. Dr. Serkan Aygin's clinic gives "a certificate confirming a lifetime guarantee on the growth of the transplanted grafts".7 The page we read gives no conditions. Asthetica guarantees "to replace any non-growing hair transplant graft free of charge, providing the patient has adequate donor hair and meets our terms and conditions".8
Neither promise covers how the result looks. Neither covers hair you keep losing around the grafts. Medic Istanbul offers hair patients a free consultation and treatment again at its partner clinic. It also says: "We don't cover flight and accommodation costs".2
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is wary of the word itself. It says illicit clinics lure patients with "misleading advertising claims promising low prices and guaranteed results".9 That is not a verdict on any clinic named here. It is a reason to read the terms behind the word.
What the law gives you anyway
A warranty is an extra promise. It does not replace the legal minimum.
In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says every service contract includes a term that the trader "must perform the service with reasonable care and skill".10 A contract term cannot exclude that liability.11 If the work falls below that standard, you have a claim, warranty or not. Whether a UK court applies the Act to a clinic abroad depends on the contract, as our medical tourism contract checklist explains.
The EU's unfair-terms directive covers the "clinic decides" condition directly. It lists, as possibly unfair, a term "giving the seller or supplier the right to determine whether the goods or services supplied are in conformity" with the contract.12 The same list includes terms that inappropriately limit your rights when the work is inadequate.
The Budapest guide also says "Hungarian law requires a minimum 2-year warranty for dental services".4 We could not reach the Hungarian statute to confirm that wording, so treat it as the guide's account.
What the published terms leave out
How often claims are paid. None of the clinics or makers we read publishes how many warranty claims it receives, or how many it honours. A long warranty is a promise, not a track record.
Terms that are not online. Two of the eight offers published a warranty length but not its conditions. That does not mean there are none. It means you will see them only when you ask, or when you claim.
The sample. Eight offers on seven clinic websites, and two makers, are a set we chose to read, not a survey. Other clinics will publish different terms. The point of the table is the questions it raises, not the clinics in it.
Your own record. The UK General Dental Council suggests asking any clinic abroad: "Who pays for the extra flights, hotel and remedial work?"13 If your work fails at home, the money may come from a card claim rather than the warranty. Our guide to getting money back after Turkey teeth go wrong compares those routes.
How to read a warranty before you pay
Ask for the warranty terms in writing, as a document, before you pay any deposit. Then check five things:
- Which component each period covers: implant, abutment, crown or labour.
- Who decides whether a claim is valid, and how quickly.
- Where the repair must happen, and who pays the flights and hotel.
- What ends the cover, especially treatment by another dentist and missed check-ups.
- The implant brand and batch, so a dentist at home can identify the parts.
Ask for anything missing to be added to the contract. The aftercare section of our free medical contract review checklist walks through the same questions for your own contract.
